Bible Reading • A simple place to begin

How to Start Reading the Bible

    Plan Your Visit

You open a Bible and find a table of contents full of unfamiliar names. Some pages tell stories. Others contain poems, laws, or letters. Where should you start, and what should you do when a passage does not make sense?

Start small. Choose one book, read a short section, and ask what it shows you about God. You do not need to understand the whole Bible before you can begin.

The Bible is God's Word, given to make him known and guide our faith and life. Reading it is more than collecting facts or searching for a sentence that fits our mood. We are learning to listen, understand, and respond. Second Timothy 3:14-17 explains Scripture's role in leading us toward faith in Christ and equipping us to live faithfully.

    Start with a Gospel

Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are the four Gospels. They tell us about Jesus' life, teaching, death, and resurrection. Any of them is a good starting point.

For this plan, begin with John. Near the end of his book, John explains that he wrote so readers would believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and have life in his name. Read John 20:30-31.

That gives you a question to carry through the book: Who is Jesus, and what does it mean to trust him?

The free fourteen-day plan introduces key passages in John. It is a first step, not a summary of everything in the Gospel. After the plan, go back and read the whole book from beginning to end. The parts between these readings matter, too.

Use a translation you can understand

A translation puts the Bible's original languages into the language you read. The links in this guide use the Christian Standard Bible, or CSB. You can also use a Bible you already own.

Find the book name first, then the chapter number, then the smaller verse numbers. For example, John 1:1-18 means the Gospel of John, chapter 1, verses 1 through 18. John is different from the shorter letters called 1 John, 2 John, and 3 John.

An audio Bible can help if listening fits your day better than reading. Pause when you need to, and listen to a section again. You do not get extra credit for choosing the harder format.

Learn with a church, not just on your own

Our Sunday messages connect the Bible with everyday life. Watch a message from Shelby Alliance, then bring your questions as we keep learning to follow Jesus together.

    Try a ten-minute rhythm

Begin with a short prayer. “God, help me understand your Word. Show me what is true about Jesus and how to respond.” Christians depend on the Holy Spirit to help them understand and live out God's truth.

Read the passage once without stopping at every unfamiliar word. Then read it again more slowly. Notice who is speaking, what happens, and what ideas repeat.

Write one sentence about what you learned. It could be as simple as, “Jesus notices people others overlook.” Add a question if something is unclear. Finish by asking God to help you respond faithfully.

Ten minutes is a useful starting point, not a rule. Some days you may spend longer. Other days you may read a few verses carefully. Keep the goal in view: knowing God and following Jesus, not finishing a checklist.

    Ask three useful questions

What does this passage actually say? Look at the words before jumping to what they might mean for you. Who is there? What is being taught or done?

What does it show about God and people? Notice Jesus' words and actions. Pay attention to people's needs, questions, wrong choices, and responses to him.

How should I respond? Sometimes the next step is trust, repentance, gratitude, or obedience. Sometimes it is asking for help to understand. Not every passage gives you an immediate task to complete.

For example, John 13:1-17 describes Jesus washing his disciples' feet. Notice his humble service and what he tells them afterward. You might ask where pride keeps you from serving someone. That response grows from the passage rather than from a random thought you brought to it.

Keep the surrounding story in view

A verse belongs inside a paragraph, a book, and the Bible's larger story. Read what comes before and after it. Ask whether you are reading a poem, a story, or a letter. Those forms communicate in different ways.

A difficult sentence may become clearer in context. If it does not, write down the question instead of forcing a quick answer. Talk with a pastor or a mature Christian who will read the passage with you. Questions are part of learning.

Avoid treating each verse as a private prediction about your future. God's promises are trustworthy, but we need to understand whom a promise addresses and what it actually says.

Begin again when you miss a day

Bible reading does not earn God's love or forgiveness. Jesus saves us by grace through faith, not because we keep a perfect schedule. Read Ephesians 2:8-10. As we trust him, Scripture helps shape the way we live.

If you miss a day, continue with the next reading. You can take more than fourteen days. A slower pace that helps you understand is better than rushing just to finish.

Start today with John 1:1-18. Download the free plan below without signing up. If you are near Shelby and would like to learn with others, explore Shelby Alliance Church or plan a visit. Bring your questions with you.
